What does the term interpersonal relationship actually mean?
Does it mean marriage, love affair, courtship, friendship, intimacy or sibling interaction?
Actually interpersonal relationship incorporate all these various forms. Relationship is one if the basic necessities especial when it comes to love and intimacy. Long time ago Abraham Maslow identified relationship as the corner stone of social needs in his famous hierarchy of needs theory. All of us whether successful or unsuccessful; famous or notorious we need some kind of relationship to satisfy our social needs.
We need to love and be loved; we need both sexual and non-sexual relationships; we need our friends, our community and our fellow country men and women. For us to be truly successful in our arts and careers we have to rely, trust and confide in someone who who sees us for what we are. There is no such thing as independent man or woman. Have you ever heard that behind every successful man there is a woman or no man is an island? Well, this applies to women too. In fact we must say behind every successful person, there is another human being or no one is an island.
Relationships are corner stones of our success, have you ever heard about a concept called networking? If you haven't, go up to your boss and ask him or her what networking is? I am sure he or she will have a lot to tell because it is through networking that anyone find it manageable to sustain a boss-hood position.
While we may say a lot about relationships, one thing for sure is that it is difficult to maintain them. Look around you how many people walk around with broken hearts. Some of us come from nonfunctional families due to a rocky relationship between our parents. Some were raise by single parent because mom and dad were unsuccessful in maintaining a healthy relationship.
It is wonderful to be in love, to love and be loved. But we are not talking about a fairy tale here. To maintain a loving relationship, one has to work for it irrespective whether we are talking about marriage, affairs or courtships.
Oh yes, it is not easy to sustain an affair (sexual or emotional), it takes lot of hard work. Think about time and money invested in such relationships without a guarantee that they will last. There are emotional baggages and sexual favours that are thrown in as a package with a risk of ruining marriages, friendships or careers. It is not easy to lie, you have to cover your tracks all the time.
Where were we? Ah! we were talking about maintenance of relationships. Matters of heart, just like our careers, need to be nurtured and understood intimately for them to yield desirable results. Successful relationship is a must for the sake of our mental health and emotional well being. For this purpose, some men and women have invested their time and resources to help us understand the ins and outs of relationships. Some of them have written books or e-books. I have also written and complied some articles just for us to have an idea of where to start if we want to maintain or start new relationships.
I must admit that when coming to matters of the heart, there is no magic formula. A relationship between two people is mostly complicated by egos, beliefs, pride and plain selfishness. You must understand that in a loving and intimate relationship (e.g. marriage or courtship) you have to lower all your guards for your lover to enter your life. On the other hand our brains are programmed to protect us from being hurt. It therefore means that to be in love, we must forego our instinct to protect ourselves against our lovers. In real world we know that there predators and untrustworthy people and so we find it difficult to lower our defenses even for our loved one.
Does that mean we are facing a hopeless situation? No, lucky for us there are materials to help us with knowledge and tools that can be used consciously to spice-up our relationships. We can used these tools to identify which aspect of our defense mechanism we have to modify so that our partners can feel loved and appreciated.
