The What, Why, When, Where and How of Success

The What & Why

Everybody wants to be successful in one way or the other. But how does one define success? Before you can answer the question, take a look at my definition:

"Success is the attainment of dreams and goals which brings happiness into our lives while the attainment thereof benefits humanity."

Let us unpack the above statement for a moment. Firstly the statement said nothing about wealth or big monies but if big Swiss Bank account is your dream then go for it. Success is not necessarily about money (although accumulation of money is one of the measures of success); it is about achieving dreams and goals that make you happy. It is worthless to chase after something that will not give you peace of mind, innermost fulfilment and happiness at the end of the day.

Secondly dreams and goals that bring you happiness are those that feed your needs rather than your wants. Needs are internal desires while wants are external desires. Internal desires are real and not harmful to your body, soul and mind. External desire leads to hollow victories, regrets and shame.

For example by satisfying your hunger, you feed your body while submitting to your cravings may lead to obesity or ill-health. A goal based on the desire to have money is less satisfying than a goal based on the desire for financial freedom. In the former you work for your pay cheque and in the latter your pay cheque works for you.

Thirdly to be truly successful, you must be of service to your fellow brothers and sisters. You must endeavour, as far as practically possible, not to achieve your success at the expense of others. Rather be of service to others and sincerely mean well in your undertakings.  This has something to do with the Laws of Universe such as Law of Attraction and Law of Karma.

Discussion about the Laws of Universe falls outside the scope of this article.

The What of Success

In order to succeed, you will need to know what you want to achieve. 'The What' is like a guiding compass to a specific destination. Many pray to God to for deliverance without being specific. Prayer without a specific objective in mind is in vain. The Bible say we must ask and things we ask for will be given to us, so don’t be modest be bold and ask for what you need and God will provide.

God knows all your desires but you must have faith in His ability to provide and that is why it is important to be specific in your prayers or meditations. Furthermore you must make certain that things you ask for are based on your needs, your internal needs rather than your external wants in order for you to be truly blessed. For example ask for the love of a man or woman with certain qualities rather than for the love of specific man or woman, e.g. a model or your neighbour across the street.

In contrary to what I said above, you can get anything you desire under the sun. Your wants and needs can become a reality irrespective of whether they are righteous or wicked. Manifestation power behind bad and good desires is the same. For example the desire to murder someone and the desire get a high paying job have equal chances of occurrence. This is simply because when you obey God’s Universal Laws you will get the results you are looking for. The only problem about the results or 'the What' is each one attracts consequences or karma. That is why it is important to ask for deliverance based on your needs rather than your wants. Needs are pure and seek no harm unto none and consequently no harm will befall you.

The Why of Success

"Success is not the key to happiness, happiness is the key to success", said Albert Schweitzer. I think this captures the essence of success. It is difficult for me see happiness and success in poverty but only ills such sickness and wickedness. I say to you seek happiness to escape depravation in favour of abundance.

Everyone is born for a specific purpose or purposes. To fulfil this purpose we are given the ability (e.g. talent or skills) to make our mission easy. When we fulfil our purpose, extra ordinary things happen in our lives that fills our internal space with peace, strength, happiness and sense of accomplishment. As mentioned above, success has something to do with happiness and being useful to humanity. Our usefulness or service to humanity is our purpose and 'the Why' of success has something to do with fulfilling our purpose.

Why must you be successful? Well you can say if you are not successful, you are doing disservice to humanity. No one will benefit from your service when you are caught in the rat race, driven by myopic intentions with hollow victories or being drifted into a state of powerlessness.

There is no honour in poverty, sickness and wickedness. Make introspection and ask yourself whether are you a happy person or a sad person deep down in your heart? If you are happy, then you must be successful or on your way to attaining your success. If you are not, then determine what you need to do in order to be happy.

For example take a piece of paper and divide it into two columns. The heading in the first column must be 'The What of Success' and the second column will have a heading called 'The Why of Success'. In the first column list at least 20 things you can do for your family, friends, community and your country. Do not limit or judge yourself, just write things as they come to your mind.

In the corresponding row under 'The Why of Success' write reason why you think item in the first column will benefit others, including your family. This may take you a couple of days or weeks to complete. There is no rush. You can continue adding to your list until you are satisfied that ‘The What of Success’ list is exhausted.

When you have finished providing reasons for your intended service, reduce your list to five items. Concentrate on the remaining five and determine which one resonates with your feelings or appeal to your innermost consciousness. Keep those that resonate with you and eliminate the rest. Do not throw away your paper or papers; keep them safe for future reference.

Then transfer each item that is not eliminated onto its own clean piece of paper; still under the heading of 'The What of Success' and 'The Why of Success'. Underneath each list, write goal or goals that correspond to your 'The What of Success'.

There are plenty of books or articles on the internet that can help you to formulate proper goals. The only thing to remember is to focus on your needs rather than your wants as you set your goals. Wayne Ellis has this to say about goals:

"What you need to do before you establish a goal is ask yourself – What is the feeling I'tam getting? If the feeling excites you, takes you to another level, you know the goal is right."
